“This program provided me with the opportunity to meet my peers across the state. It allowed me to both share my expertise and gain new knowledge from colleagues and presenters. Through my participation in the ELI program, I was given the opportunity to become a NYSCAA Board member and a National Certified ROMA Trainer. I now have a network of ‘friends‛ across the state and country that I can rely on and bounce ideas and situations off of. It was a very valuable experience!” Laura Rossman

CEO, ProAction of Steuben and Yates Inc.

What is the Emerging Leaders Institute?

The Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI) is a year-long leadership development program, occurring in three separate two day sessions. ELI is designed to build or enhance critical skills and attributes for success as a future leader within New York’s Community Action Network. This collaborative learning experience incorporates:

  • Formal training to build skills and knowledge
  • Peer networking opportunities to build local and statewide relationships
  • Team building to stimulate cross-collaboration
  • Project implementation and management techniques
  • Positive techniques for mentoring and supervising staff

Each year, NYSCAA develops a progressive curricula for the Emerging Leaders Institute (ELI). There are three classes offered each calendar year. ELI 1.0 is the first step in the two-level program and is designed for individuals who are seeking to gain basic leadership skills.

Not all ELI 1.0 candidates are in a management position when they apply. Many are seeking to develop the skills that will lead them to a career track with management responsibilities. Other ELI 1.0 candidates are new or have had management responsibilities within their agencies and want to build on their existing skill set and knowledge base.

Who Should Apply?
NYSCAA encourages all Community Action staff who are looking to enhance their leadership skills, increase their connection to community Action and relationships with CAA staff to apply. Various job positions have been represented in previous ELI classes from Coordinators, Program Manager, CFO, Directors and IT. All positions within an agency will find this program valuable.

Application Process

Applicants are urged to complete and submit their applications as soon as possible, once the application is made available. Candidates will be selected on a first come-first serve basis.

Please Note:  In order to provide candidates an optimal learning experience, the number of ELI 1.0 candidate slots are limited to 20 for the Class of 2018.
